This Week: Fanny Alger is one of the area's craziest rock bands. Apparently by picking Super Bowl Sunday so that no one will be listening to their interview, the band continues to pursue its offbeat path to obscurity. Fanny Alger combines punk rock, satire and muddle headedness to create a truly unique brand of musical madness. They're are one of my favorite bands to interview and you'll find out more than you want to know about Fanny Alger, on this week's edition of Locals Only.
And, by the way, they've given me a few of the new Yellow Monster CD to give away, Just e-mail me at pooner@kism.com and tell me what you attracts you to Fanny Alger and I'll send you a copy of the new CD.
Coming up:

Here are some of the artists who've made recent appearances:

January 29th - Misty Flowers is a young singer-songwriter from Deming. She writes from the heart and brings a unique perspective to her work. She has recorded another selection of her original material. We'll listen to cuts from the new CD and find out what she's been up to lately on this week's editon of Locals Only.

January 22nd - Kings of the Philistines are a Bellingham band composed of transplants to the area from Iowa, eastern Washington and the Pierce County area. The guys are having a lot of fun with their music and have recently recorded a new EP. We'll listen to the new EP and find out more about these local musicians on this weeks edition of Locals Only.

January 8th - Chad Knight hails from the south, but has made his move to the Northwest and is working on putting together a rockin' band in this part of the world. He grew up in a musical family in Mississippi, so his music has a bit of that southern rock flavor. We'll listen to cuts from his most recent CD and find out more about this recent transplant to the Northwest on this edition of Locals Only.

December 18th - The Ames have put together a sound that combines a modern sensibility with traditional influences. The guys are from Bellingham and Ferndale and have put together a recording that is heartfelt and unpretentious. Sam, Mike and Dan seem to actually enjoy each other on a personal basis and the music reflects the mutual respect. I enjoyed having them in the studio and you get to meet them on this week's edition of Locals Only.

December 4th -Calico Queen are a group of young people from Bow and Bellingham. Little more than a year old, the band is putting together music with a classic rock influence and they're ready to take it to the people. Kait Raymond has a great voice she developed in karaoke performances of Fleetwood Mac songs. Guitarist Robbie Duffy, drummer Dillon Finnegan and bassist Connor Specht add the instrumentation. They're an energetic young group of musicians who play with obvious enthusiasm. Check them out on this week's edition of Locals Only.

November 20th - DRiP hail from Port Angeles.  Ric Mahurin on guitar and vocals, Bill Buttocolla on bass, and Don Villella on drums are heavy rockers at heart. As Buttoculla and Villella have only been playing thier instruments for a couple of years, the band rallies behind the more experienced Mahurin and lays down a heavy bottom for the Ric's musicianship and lyrics. Meet the guys in DRiP and get ready to rock. We'll listen to cuts from their new CD and find out more about the forces that drive this Port Angeles trio on this week's edition of Locals Only.

November 13th - Woodshed are a young band from Arlington. Though all the members are in their early, early twenties, they play like seasoned old pros. Lead guitarist Hunter Venturo, rhythm guitarist Matt Tissue, bassist Jordan Huus, and drummer Greg Allen display a heavy classic rock influence in their original music. Meet the band and listen to a few cuts from their recent EP on this week's edition of Locals Only.

November 6th -  Boss and Rand are a couple of young Bellingham musicians who combine classic rock influences with a little twang of country in their recent self-titled debut recording. Though a recording duo now, these guys hope to recruit some partners in crime to bring their sound to the region's club scene. John Boss provides the vocals and bass while Doc Rand fills in the sound and handles the board work. A good recording effort for a pair of talented local musicians. Check them out on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, October 30th - Woodrush is an inventive band from the Everett area. Kelly Shirey, Jim Castaneda and Leland Hirschman blend rock, folk, funk and everything else in the kitchen sink to produce a fresh rockin' brand of music. You'll enjoy the classic sound the band has put together and you'll be amazed at Castaneda's talent as a "vocal percussionist." Truly a new and refreshing musical experience, check out Woodrush on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, October 16th - Manooghi Hi is an unusual and inventive band from Seattle. The band combines basic rock signatures with the music of India and the Middle East. Guitarist Todd Fogelsonger points out that early in their careers The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and many of the era's great bands spent time studying the music and traditions of India. He considers the influences a natural marriage of styles that have always been present in classic rock music. Manooghi Hi just brings the sounds into the present. Lead vocalist Mehnaz Hoosein has ventured half way round the world to join Ava Chakravarti to provide the band with soaring vocals.

Sunday, October 9th - Andy "Bad Dogg" Koch has been preaching the blues throughout the Northwest for almost three decades. A man of many talents, Andy's main love is the blues and he's one of the hardest working men in local music. Always ready to play, Andy has surrounded himself with some of the areas most talented musicians. Recently he's finished his second recording. We talked to Andy about his love of the blues and checked out the new CD on this week's edition of Locals Only. David Payne and Fat James turned up at the studio, too.

Sunday, September 25th - euGene Wendell is an outstanding group from Port Angeles. Gene Stashuk and Doc Gardner create some incredible aural experiences. Gene does amazing work on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, while Doc adds some sharp percussion and good backing vocals. The pair have crafted some sophisticated music in Gene's home studio and the results are a first class recording with haunting melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Truly one of the Northwest's top recording acts. We listened to cuts from their latest CD Islands in the Sun and had a great time with these twisted peninsula sound merchants on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, August 28th - Dino DiNicolo has been on Locals Only on a couple of previous occasions. His first appearance was as the bassist with the band Supertonic. After Supertonic dissolved, Dino decided to continue as a solo. A switch to guitar you might think, but Dino continued on with only his bass, his voice and his stomp box. The stomp box has given way to an electronic Washboard, but now, with a third CD I've Seen The Devil, Dino seems to have taken this solo thing seriously. Check out the new CD and visit with Dino once again on this week's Locals Only.

Sunday, August 21st - Jim Basnight has been a presence on the Northwest music scene for more than 30 years. Dubbed the next big thing in Seattle music with bands like The Moberlys and The Rockinghams, Jim has continued to perform as a solo and with different groups as the big time passed by, but he's always been a giant presence throughout the Northwest. Still performing almost every weekend somewhere, we'll catch up with Jim and find out what he's up to today.

Sunday, July 31st -  Prime Time Heroes are a band made up of primarily musicians from the San Francisco area, but their drummer and recording studio are in Bellingham. The group was recently in the area to do some additonal recording and to perform at this year's Bite of Seattle. The group is composed of veteran musicians who've known each other for years and worked together in various bands. Recently they've been overcome with creative energy. Meet Prime Time Heroes and check out their latest recordings on this edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, July 17th - The Chris Eger Band is one of my favorite bands. Chris is an excellent, young guitarist and silky smooth blues vocalist. Brendan Abshire plays the keys like an old pro.  Bassist Randy Eger and drummer Mark Clark are old pros. Together they're one of the Northwest great rockin' blues bands. They'll be making an appearance at The Mount Baker Rhythm and Blues Festival on Friday, July 29th. They've also recorded some new material and we gave it a listen on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, July 10th - The Dudes Abide are a band with local and California roots. Mark Wright and David Caron are the local connection for this band. Working out of Seventh Heaven Studios, the two put together basic tracks for this recording and then brought in some old friends to flesh things out. Bob Kinney and John Keith came into the studio to record with their group Prime Time Heroes. After hearing a few cuts, the guys dug in and added electric guitar and bass to the mix. The result is a powerful recording that we'll check out on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, July 3rd - The Fat James Band was one of the hottest blues bands on the Northwest music scene during the decade of the 90s. The group broke up a decade ago, but will reunite for this year's Mount Baker Rhythm and Blues Festival (July 29,30 and 31) at the Deming Log Show grounds. Festival promoter Lloyd Peterson had to book a couple of bands to get James Band members to the Festival. Bassist Tracy Arrington currently tours with Curtis Salgado. Drummer Chip Hart is a member of Vancouver's The Twisters. Pianist Dave Cashen teaches music in Seattle. James will be with me in the studio as he gets ready to team up with his former band. Meet Fat James on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, June 19th - Jon Memelo owns one of Bellingham's best music stores, but he's also one of the areas hardest working musicians. We talked with Jon about his main thing, The Pop Offs, but we'll also checked out his musical side trips and past. It's one of Bellingham's hottest guitarists and his music on this edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, June 12th - Fanny Alger are one of my favorite local bands. Always outrageous, the band pokes fun at all the crazy aspects of modern life. We risked the KISM studio once more to listen to a few cuts and talk with the band about their latest exploits. As usual, it's one of the crazier recent shows and you can check it out here on Locals Only.

Sunday, May 29th - The Twitch are a great bunch of guys from Vancouver who also turn out some of the most listenable rock I've heard in a while. They appeared on the program earlier this year, but they' have some new material and a gig scheduled in Bellingham. So I've invited them back for another appearance. Find out more about The Twitch and hear their latest recordings on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, May 22nd - Marvin J is one of the first guys I met when I moved to Bellingham many moons ago. Oddly enough, even though I was playing in a well-known local band, it took me twenty years to find out Marvin J was keyboard maniac and a collector of Hammond organs. Now anyone familiar with the local music scene knows Marvin J. Marvin has a special gig coming up and we'll find out more about that and hear a little of his work on this week's edition of Locals Only.

Sunday, May 1st - Hambone Wilson has played the blues throughout Whatcom County since relocating here about 15 years ago. He's one of those guys who always have a guitar in hand. Recently he's finished a new CD. We'll listen to some cuts and check out one of the area's premier bluesmen on this week's editon of Locals Only.

Sunday, April 10th - The Bogarts got together during their high school days in Bellingham. Together for the last half dozen years, the band has survived its members moving to different parts of the Puget Sound are for jobs and school. They continue to record together and have produced a new CD of original material. Meet The Bogarts and listen to a few cuts from the new recording on this week's Locals Only.

Sunday, April 3rd - Your High Horse is a group composed of Bellingham musicians who've played together in one form and at various times over the past decade. The new grouping has just put out their first CD, so we'll listen to a few cuts and find out more about the crazed members of Your High Horse.

Sunday, March 27th - Brad Cash plays a mean guitar and has developed what I think is a pretty unique talent for putting together parodies of popular songs. His ripoffs are one of the great features on our morning show. Cash is pretty modest about his guitar playing, but he's sat in with local band Problem Child on several occasions and he enjoys playing. We\'ll find out more about Cash and his involvement with music and radio on this week's edition of Locals Only.
